Google Policy Update: Connect Gmail or Photos to AI Features and Ads May Use It
Google's privacy policy now has an exception: connect Gmail, Drive or Photos to its AI features and ads may use what Google learns from them. Here is what changed and what to check.

Google changed its privacy policy on 16 October 2026. It still says it does not show personalised ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail or Google Photos, but it now adds an exception: if you choose to connect those apps to Google's AI features, what Google learns from them can be used for ads. So, does Google use Gmail data for ads? Not by default and not directly, but in this one case, yes. This update explains what changed and what to check this week. It is based on Google's Privacy Policy and Google's own help pages, read on 25 October 2026.
What happened: Google added an exception to its Gmail and Photos ads promise
- Google's Privacy Policy, which Google marks as effective 16 October 2026, says Google does not show personalised ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail or Google Photos, "unless you choose" to make that data available to other Google services that support personalised ads.
- The earlier version, dated 1 October 2026 in Google's policy archive, had the same promise without the "unless" part.
- The same policy says Search may process some of the data you allow it to access in order to personalise content, "including ads".
- Google's Search Help page on connecting content apps says ads "will not be based directly" on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. It also says Search "may reference summaries, excerpts and inferences" from them, and that the same information may be used to show you ads.
- That page says advertisers do not get access to your Gmail inbox or Google Photos. The policy also excludes sensitive categories, such as health, from personalised ads.
- The Verge reported the change on 23 October 2026. We checked the wording against Google's own pages.
What is not known: Google's pages do not say how many people have connected these apps, or whether the change already shows up in ads in India.
Why it matters for a small business
Many Indian owners run the business from a personal Gmail address. Quotations, payment confirmations, supplier mails and customer enquiries sit in that inbox. Product photos, shop pictures and sometimes photos of documents sit in Google Photos.
Nothing on Google's pages says your inbox is used for ads by default. The change applies when you connect these apps to features such as Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app or in AI Mode in Search. Google describes connecting as your choice. But a feature you or a team member switched on earlier for better answers may now have a second use, ads.
The risk is not that advertisers see your mail, because Google says they do not. The risk is that you agreed to one thing and the policy now allows another.
Who should care
- Owners who use a personal Gmail address for business mail.
- Anyone who has connected Gmail or Google Photos to Gemini or to AI Mode in Search.
- Teams where staff send customer details or document photos through personal accounts.
What changes for you
| Your situation | What Google's pages say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Gmail, never connected to Gemini or Search | Connecting is a choice you make | Nothing to switch off; check once that it is off |
| Personal Gmail or Photos is connected | Ads may use summaries and inferences from them | Decide if the better answers are worth it; disconnect if not |
| Work, school or supervised account, for example business email on Google Workspace | Gemini's help page says Personal Intelligence is not available on these accounts | The connection does not apply; keep business mail on a work account (our advice) |
Before 16 October the policy gave a flat promise of no ads from this content. After it, the promise has one condition, and the condition is your own setting.
How to check your Google settings this week
- Open Gemini (gemini.google.com or the app). Go to Settings, then Personal Intelligence, then Connected apps. Turn off Google Workspace (this covers Gmail) and Google Photos if you do not need them. Google's Gemini help page describes these steps.
- In Google Search, tap your profile picture, then Search personalization, then the connected content apps. This path comes from Google's January 2026 post. Google's help page says the Search settings screens are being updated, so the names may differ.
- Open My Ad Center and check whether personalised ads are on. Google's help page says you can turn personalised ads on or off there.
- Remember that disconnecting does not erase the past. Google's help page says disconnecting an app, or deleting data in it, does not delete data from your Search Services History, which can still be used for product improvement, including training generative AI models. You can manage and delete that history at activity.google.com.
- Our own advice: do not keep ID copies, bank statements or customer lists in a personal Gmail or Photos account. Read our guide on customer data privacy and AI tools and set simple AI rules for your team.
If you do not see these screens, the feature may not have reached you yet; Google says it is released gradually.
What to watch next
- Whether Google explains in more detail how ads use summaries and inferences from connected apps.
- Whether Personal Intelligence reaches more free users in India. Google's India post of 14 April 2026 started with paid Google AI plans and said free users would follow.
- Your ad settings: look at My Ad Center again after Google updates its Search settings screens.
