WhatsApp Business AI in India: what it does and how a small business should start
Meta has put an AI assistant inside the WhatsApp Business app for small businesses in India. Here is what it does, what is still unclear, and how to try it without putting customers at risk.

In May 2026 Meta announced Business AI on WhatsApp for small businesses in India: an AI assistant inside the WhatsApp Business app that replies to your customers for you. This update explains what was announced, what Meta has not said, and how to try it without putting customers at risk. It reflects what Meta has published as of 12 October 2026.
What happened: Business AI comes to the WhatsApp Business app
According to Meta's announcement, Business AI works inside the WhatsApp Business app. It needs no coding and no other tool. Meta says it can:
- answer common questions about products and services, prices, discounts and shipping
- recommend products and share information from your business profile and catalogue
- capture leads and book appointments
- help a customer complete a purchase
Meta says it is available in all Indian languages, and that you set it up in the app under Tools, then "Your Business AI", following the steps on screen. You can take over any conversation yourself, change how the assistant works, or switch it off.
Two things were promised for later. Meta said the feature would reach all eligible businesses "over the coming weeks", and that the assistant would soon be able to take payments inside a chat using UPI. We found no announcement that the UPI part has started.
Why it matters for a small business
For most Indian small businesses, WhatsApp is already where customers ask their questions. Answering them with AI has usually meant buying a separate tool and connecting it. Business AI sits in the app you already use, so trying it needs no new software.
The other side is just as important. The assistant answers in your name. A wrong price, an old return policy or a promise you cannot keep is your problem, not Meta's.
Who should care
- Shops, service businesses and online sellers who get the same questions every day in the WhatsApp Business app.
- Businesses that lose enquiries at night, on Sundays or during rush hours.
It matters less to you for now if you use the WhatsApp Business API through a software provider (the announcement covers the app), or if a wrong answer is costly in your field, as in medical, legal or financial advice.
What changes for your business
- Your profile and catalogue become the script. Meta says the assistant uses your own business information. Whatever is wrong there will be repeated to customers.
- The first reply can be instant, but you stay responsible. Someone still has to read what was said and step in.
- You need a hand-over rule. Decide in advance which questions a person must answer.
- Customers should know. Meta's post does not say how customers are told they are chatting with an AI assistant. Tell them yourself, in one line of your greeting message.
Is WhatsApp Business AI free? What Meta has not said
| Question | What the announcement says |
|---|---|
| Who is eligible? | Businesses "must meet certain criteria". The criteria are not listed. |
| What does it cost? | No price is mentioned. |
| Are customers told it is AI? | Not stated. |
| How are the conversations used? | Only that "businesses remain in control at all times". |
| Can it take UPI payments? | Announced as coming soon. No launch found as of 12 October 2026. |
Read the terms shown in the app when you switch it on, and treat customer details with the same care as before. Our guide on customer data, privacy and AI tools explains what to watch.
Meta's post also quotes results from two businesses. They are examples chosen by Meta, not a measure of what you will get, so we do not repeat the numbers here.
How to start with Business AI: five steps for this week
- Look for it. Update the WhatsApp Business app and open the Tools tab. If "Your Business AI" is not there, your account is not eligible yet. Step 2 is still worth doing.
- Clean your profile and catalogue. Check prices, what is in stock, delivery areas, working hours and your return policy.
- Write two short lists: what the assistant may answer, and what a person must answer.
- Test it as a customer. From another phone, ask ten real questions, including one it should not answer. Note every wrong answer and correct the information it came from.
- Tell customers, then read every chat for a week. Add a line such as "Our AI assistant replies first. For anything it cannot solve, our team will reply." to your greeting, and check each AI conversation daily until you trust it.
An example of the two lists, for a made-up clothing shop:
| The assistant may answer | A person must answer |
|---|---|
| Price, sizes and colours in the catalogue | Complaints and refunds |
| Delivery areas and delivery time | Bulk or custom orders |
| Shop timings and location | Anything about a payment that failed |
| How to place an order | Any question it was not sure about |

What to watch next
- Whether the UPI payment feature starts, and with which safeguards.
- Whether Meta announces a price.
- Whether the eligibility criteria are published or widened.
- How clearly customers are told when an AI assistant is replying.
