Product descriptions and catalogue content with AI, for online sellers
Good listings answer the buyer's questions before they ask. Build one fact sheet per product and let AI write titles, descriptions and bullet points that stay true.

On this page
If you sell on a marketplace, your own website or a WhatsApp catalogue, your listing does the job of a salesperson. Most returns and questions come from listings that leave something out. AI can write good listings quickly, provided you give it the facts.
Step 1: Make a fact sheet for each product
One row per product in a spreadsheet, with these columns:
| Column | Example (a made-up steel bottle) |
|---|---|
| Product name | Insulated steel water bottle |
| Size and weight | 750 ml, 320 g |
| Material | Stainless steel, inner and outer |
| Colours | Black, blue, silver |
| Key features | Keeps water cold for several hours, leak-proof cap, fits a car cup holder |
| Who it is for | Office, gym, travel |
| Care | Hand wash, do not microwave |
| In the box | One bottle, one cap |
| What it is not | Not for fizzy drinks |
| Warranty or returns | As per your policy |
Fill in only what you know to be true. If you have not tested how long it keeps water cold, do not put a number.
Step 2: Generate the listing
You write product listings for an online seller in India. Using only the facts below, write: (1) a title under 80 characters with the product type, key feature and size; (2) five bullet points, each starting with the benefit and then the fact; (3) a description of 80 to 120 words in simple English; (4) five search phrases a buyer might type. Do not add any feature, number, certification or claim that is not in the facts. If something important for a buyer is missing, list it under "Missing information". Facts: [paste the row].
The "Missing information" line is useful. It tells you what buyers will ask about.
Step 3: Check every claim
Read the listing against the fact sheet. Look especially for:
- numbers the AI may have rounded or invented
- words such as "best", "100%", "guaranteed", "medical", "organic" or "BIS certified" that you cannot prove
- comparisons with other brands
- anything about health or safety
In India, the product page must also carry the mandatory declarations that apply to your product, such as the maximum retail price, country of origin and seller details. Check your marketplace's requirements and the rules for your product category. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
Step 4: Adapt for each place you sell
Ask for versions instead of rewriting by hand:
- "Shorten the description to 40 words for a WhatsApp catalogue."
- "Rewrite the bullet points for a customer who is buying this as a gift."
- "Write the same description in simple Hindi."
Keep your master version in the spreadsheet, so that every channel says the same thing.
Step 5: Do a batch, not one at a time
Once the prompt works for one product, do ten in a sitting. Paste the rows one after another, or ask the AI to process a small table. Check each result; do not publish in bulk without reading.
Photos and images
AI image tools can clean a background or create a lifestyle setting. Two cautions:
- The product itself must look exactly as it does in real life. Do not let an image tool change its colour, shape or size.
- Follow your marketplace's image rules, which often require a plain background for the main photo.
Use customer questions to improve listings
Every month, collect the questions buyers asked and the reasons for returns. Add the answers to the fact sheet and regenerate the listing. A listing that answers the question before it is asked sells better and is returned less.
Mistakes to avoid
- Letting AI write from the product name alone. It will invent features.
- Copying a competitor's listing. It may be wrong for your product, and it may infringe their rights.
- Stuffing the title with keywords. Marketplaces penalise it and buyers distrust it.
- Forgetting the box contents. "What do I get?" is one of the most common questions.
